Indonesia has many, many active and dormant volcanoes. One of the largest to erupted in recorded history (Krakatoa) was between Java and Sumatra. Read Ring of Fire by Lawrence Blair if you are interested in volcanoes and other travels around Indonesia. Here are some pictures I took of Bali's largest and most sacred volcano - Gunung Agung. We rode our bikes almost all of the way around it.
One side was mostly dry and the other side offered us a refreshingly cool shower after our climb over a pass between two volcanoes.
