Gamelan and Balinese Dance

One evening we enjoyed a performance of Balinese gamelan and dance. Gamelan is the Balinese word for orchestra. About 20 guys played a half dozen or so instruments, including a xylophone-type instrument that is struck with a hammer, a brass jar/bowl instrument that is struck with a mallet, a bamboo flute, drums, and gongs. Local dancers performed to the gamelan's accompaniment. Their finger and eye movements were in sync with the music. The limited lighting and fast motion didn't make for super pictures. After the performance, we were invited to try playing the instruments. The musicians made it look really easy, but it wasn't. They taught us a short 4-note phrase to repeat over and over.
